Riding a bike at night

There's no reason to stop riding you bike just because the sun has set. With some good light and the right attitude, you can enjoy riding late into the evening. Following these tips will help keep you safe.

  1. Lights. Use a white front light and a red tail light. An LED light works great. Make sure your batteries are fresh or carry a backup. Better safe than sorry!
  2. Reflectors. Reflectors on your bike are required. Be extra safe and make sure you wear reflective clothing or reflective tape to either your bike, your clothing or both!
  3. Know your route. Even with a good LED light, it gets dark out there so make sure you know your routed, if it's well lit or not, and if there is any road construction.
  4. Ride with a partner. Be safe and travel with a buddy. If you have to ride alone, make sure you tell someone where you are going and when to expect you to return.
  5. Be prepared. Mechanical malfunctions happen. If you can, carry a repair kit. Keep your tires inflated. Carry a mobile phone.
